 アイルランドというとアイリッシュパブが有名ですが、アイルランドの国民一人当たりの紅茶消費量は、年間1,600杯とイギリスと抜いて世界一です。1833年以降、アジアの貿易を独占していた東インド会社の崩壊を機に、ビューリーは中国産茶葉の直輸入を最初に始めました。これがビューリーズ紅茶の始まりであり、アイルランドの紅茶の始まりです。 ここで「ユリシーズ」の文豪ジェームズ・ジョイスや哲学者ウィントゲンシュタインなど多くの文化人が、執筆や創作の構想を練ったことは有名です。まさにアイルランドの文化は、ビューリーズ・オリエンタルカフェから生まれたといっても過言ではありません。

Bewleys is the heart and the hearth
of Dublin.There is a sense in which Dubliners behave like alarge,sometimes
unruly family;and walking into Bewleys never fails to give
me the feeling that I am stepping into a home.This is quite
irrational and therefore,for me at least,totally believable.
And it is a pleasure to be able to become part of that family
merely by dropping in for a coffee and a shiny bun or two.Bewleys
is cosy without being complacent,comfortable without being
soporific.There is a special Bewley buzz that is both stimulating
and reassuring. In the faces, one always finds a pleasant mixture
of strangeness and familiarity. The atmosphere is full of a
lovely rattling music made up of cups and chatter,gossip and
laughter, watchful eyes and gadabout tongues.
Bewleys is brown. I'm sure Bewleys pops into my head in a foreign
land. Wherever I go I am always visited by this brown Bewleys. Nowhere
on earth is quite like it. It is friendly, warm, lively and zippydoo.
In the witer, when Bewleys is damp, it has lots of extra interesting
smells. You habe to jostle a bit, I notice, during winter. But the
man who doesn't enjoy a bit of Bewleyjostling should be sentenced
to some other kind of coffee.
Dublin would not be Dublin without Bewleys. My own response to it
is quite simple: I love the place.

このカフェは、アイルランドの文化と深く結びついております。映画「クライングゲーム」の脚本監督のニール・ジョーダン、U2、メアリー・ブラックなどが足繁く通う、文化のたまり場でもあるのです。「風と共に去りぬ」の続編「スカーレット」や推理小説「ジョイス殺人事件」にも登場します。アイルランドに行った時は是非訪れたい伝統的でファッショナブルな場所です。
